In the hop era of craft beer with local brewers continuing to surge, the number one beer brand sold in Chicagoland continues to be Blue Moon. Depending on the time of year the second biggest beer brand sold in Chicagoland is Leinenkugel’s Summer Shandy. In the age of IPA, wheat beer is king.
Delicious, unfiltered, and an ankle buster torrent of fresh orange dreamsicle, we have taken the most Solemn Oath approach possible with this beer. White Van was honed and tested across three batches for the first time in 2018, all featuring the previously unnamed experimental hop X06297 from Hopsteiner. It’s creamsicle properties with an experiential kinship that pairs perfectly with a Belgian Wit is what we fell in love with.
Now named Lotus, this hop finds its origins from Eastern Gold, a Japanese varietal that surged in the early 20th century along with cross-breeding from a mix of Apollo, Cascade, and a USDA male. The result is a plunging crest curl of orange and vanilla with super present tropical fruit and candied grape aromas.
At SOB we’ve always taken pride in hybrid styles, particularly those rooted in Belgian tradition. White Van is the epitome of this. Elegantly fruity, light, spiced with orange peel and corriander, and an appropriate base of oats and raw wheat with low bitterness, just as you would expect from a Wit. Where we deviate tremendously is in our avant-garde approach to aroma and flavoring from our hop profile. Heaps of dry-hopped Lotus and a burst of pineapple and citrus from the super fresh super freak Denali.
White Van is a modern Wit, a true craft White Ale built to be competitive with a suggested retail price of $7.99 per 4-pack.
Our ethos at Solemn Oath has always been and will continue to be built around experimentation. With White Van’s development and the shift to year-round, this gives customers an answer for something that we saw as a problem – a modern option for a local wit bursting with uniqueness.
The goal we have at Solemn Oath is simple. And maybe someday you will figure out what that goal really is. We’re going to change the world, probably. Enjoy.
