Saturday, December 15 we close out our 2018 rendition of The Old Order with an absolute Herculean release. Five beers of wide variety and each with their own story to tell.
The ninth bottle of The Old Order for this year features the first half of a longer term project with our fine friends at 18th Street Brewery in Hammond, Indiana. Longtime friends of SOB but this is finally our first collaboration together. We’re debuting Unholy Water, an IPA that navigates an insane line between tart, sweet, and sour with mango, tamarind, lime zest, and more. We’ve partnered with Hop Butcher, Miskatonic, and The Naperville Parks Foundation to bring you a beer aged with wood from the famed Hobson Oak tree. And lastly we’re bringing two beers back with Funsponge crushers and Baise, a Belgian Chocolate Porter.
Full notes on each beer below, on to the details of the release party.
Great. it’s here again. The mandatory Corporate Holiday Party. Awkward small talk with the guys from IT. Someone ends up crying in the bathroom. Your boss tries to tell you about golf. At least there will be beer… like this spicy, chocolatey, and roasty distraction from the holiday madness. This beer is a well-defined complex stout for the holiday season and our first collaboration with our longtime friends at 18th Street in Hammond, Indiana featuring all spice, clove, nutmeg, cinnamon, and ginger.
Tartshake IPA w/ mango, tamarind, lime zest, and coconut.
Inspired by giant floating skulls that surf and might not exist, Unholy Water uses mango, tamarind, lime zest, and coconut to create a sweet and sour refreshing encounter with many layers. Utilizing a combination of kettle souring and fruit additions, this beer shoots the barrels between tart, sweet, and sour.
Bourbon Barrel-Aged Imperial Milk Stout
$29.99 w/ Portion of proceeds going to the Naperville Parks Foundation.
To the benefit of the Naperville Parks Foundation, this beer is over 250 years in the making. Hobson pays tribute to the wild and gnarled bur oak that stood in DuPage county from approximately the mid 1700’s until November 2016 when it had reached the end of its life and had to be felled. The Naperville Parks Foundation spearheaded efforts for the wood to be put to use and our use is of course to make beer. Along with our friends at Miskatonic and Hop Butcher we brewed an imperial milk stout and aged it in bourbon barrels on top of wood chips from the famous tree. The end result is a massivley rich stout, full of chocolate, that has a smooth warming finish with just a hint of smoke. We think it’s a fitting tribute to a true local icon.
Belgo-American Blonde Ale
The brewery-only return of one of our original cans. Bright citrus, melon American hop character with a light malt sweetness and notes of spiced stone fruit while being a prime crusher for the holidays.
Belgian Chocolate Porter
A soul warming dose of velvety sweet goodness with layers of toasted almond, baker’s chocolate, and malted milk decadence. First made in the fall of 2017, this beer is entering cans for the first time.
From 11AM-3PM Pierogi Joe’s will be in the back of the brewery redefining your understanding of savory and sweet.
The goal we have at Solemn Oath is simple. And maybe someday you will figure out what that goal really is. We’re going to change the world, probably. Enjoy.
